Canary Islands Climate: is there the sun all year round?
With this article I’d like to point out a detail that many people have not understood about the climate of the Canary Islands.
Is there the sun all year round in Canary Islands? The false myth of this climate.
Many think that the climate is heavenly, where there is always an intense heat, wrongly comparing this archipelago with other islands overseas that have totally another climate.
So what is the climate, in the Canary Islands?
theclimate that there is, really, is a drier climate, it is a climate with mildest temperatures and a climate that we can define as “spring” all year round.
Winter in the Canary Islands: average temperatures and what to wear
How should I dress in November, December, January, February in the Canary Islands?
Average temperatures in the Canary Islands fluctuate between 15 and 22-25 degrees in winter
The day in the Canary Islands in winter begins with a light, cool, ideal temperature for wearing a sweater or a sweatshirt. From 11.00 or 12.00 in the morning, the wonderful sun that warms these areas starts to be felt, so you can safely wear a shirt and a pair of shorts. Depending on the area where you are in the island, and depending on the day, you can also stay on the beach to soak up the sun and, on some particularly hot days, also bathe.
From the moment the sun sets, it is there that starts to get cooler, especially if you are in a particularly windy area. In the evening it is advisable to always wear something more, for example a cotton scarf to shelter from the wind, or for example a cotton sweatshirt or a light jacket. During the evening it is convenient to have such a dress.
Nothing heavy, however, we don’t talk about coats or duvets because you will never need them.
The diversity of climates in the various Canary Islands
the Canary Islands is very large, so it is important to emphasize that there is a diversity of climates in the various areas. The climate of the Canary Islands can therefore vary depending on the island: Tenerife will have its own climate, Gran Canaria will have another Lanzarote, Fuerteventura as well as La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma.
Even the climate of the same island changes depending on the position you are in, for example between the south and north of Gran Canaria there is a significant difference. In the south the climate is considerably different from the north there may also be 5, 6 degrees of difference. What changes – and makes the difference – is clearly the wind: if you find yourself in a sheltered area you will find a perceived effect of the temperature completely different from a windy one.
The climate in fact is perfectly dry and it is perceived especially in summer.
Summer in the Canary Islands: how to dress? Average temperatures and tips
The average winter temperatures indicatively go as we said from 16 to 22-24 degrees with regard to winter while with regard to the summer then the period that goes from June to September the temperature rises. Land temperatures in summer then rise between 25 and 30 degrees.
The perception of heat in summer
The temperatures, despite getting up, remain pleasantly pleasing thanks to the wind that creates a perfectly dry climate. The sensation and the perception of the heat is also noticeable in the skin. In fact, the skin tends not to sweat and to remain dry. It is a wonderful sensation to feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, pleasantly and not annoying, as is for example in the typical summer hot weather of other European areas.
At night the temperatures remain pleasing around the 25 26 27 degrees 28 degrees can be a temperature that you reach but always with a perception of naturalness.
The climate of the Canary Islands, as we have seen, is dry, mild and pleasant for most of the year. It can vary depending on the specific area and month in particular but can be defined as “spring” for most of the year.

Are there any mosquitoes in the Canary Islands?
Not at all! Mosquitoes have always been for me an annoying reminder of my Italian summer, fortunately the canary are “bichos”-safe. I precise that in some cities of the islands there could be mosquitos, but not as annoying as the “Italian” ones 🙂
