Fuerteventura, the Lucky Island

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

The eternal spring, the nature, the desert.

I happened to live Fuerteventura by chance, looking for a destination to take a vacation out of the normal circuit.

I had heard a friend talk about the views and beaches of this wonderful resort, so I decided and in the far 2013 I did fifteen days here, in the Canary Islands.

It was immediately love at first sight, from the desert sands of the Parque de las dunas de Corralejo at the beaches of Morro jable and Jandia, up to the extraordinary red expanse of cofete: When I arrived on the promontory of “Montaña Aguda” and saw the beach from above, I thought I was in a movie. And in fact, they shot you Exodus. I remember if I tried to jump up, the wind was moving me back two meters.

Fuerteventura already had the perfect ingredients for an exceptional holiday: kilometre-long beaches (over 150 km of total sand expanses), fun and romantic cities, relaxed people, good drinks and a constantly sunny weather.

Where is Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary Islands: it is located at 1200 km from Cadìz, in the district of Las Palmas, at 90 km from the African coast where Morocco borders the Sahara desert.

The Canary Islands seem almost connected to the African continent, as if they were once part of it: some, more mysteriously, bind them to the fascinating myth of Atlantis.

To reach it you will land at the International airport of Puerto del Rosario, from where you can easily arrive to the capital city (Puerto del Rosario) and the tourist towns of Corralejo and El Cotillo (to the north), Caleta de Fuste and Gran Tarajal (center island) or Costra Calma, Jandia and Morro jable (south).

It is spread from north to southwest with an extension of 100 km, so it is very easy to turn it entirely by car (or by bike, motorbike, camper) and enjoy all the landscapes that the island can offer.

Geophysical characteristics

Fuerteventura is a volcanic island, with landscapes that range from the arid hinterland to the desert north, with the immense saharian expanses.

It gives a few green spots in the central part of Costa Calma, where is also located the wonderful Oasis Park: a zoological park where the creatures are left free within large areas predefined.

The island surprises everyone with the wonderful natural pools (Playa del Charco III, El Cotillo and also Sotavento) created by the tides, for the hidden places visible with easy excursions (e.g., Cueva de los Molinos), for the extraordinary erosions created by the Wind (Ajuy) and for The splits created by the Earthquakes (road to Caldereta).

Climate of Fuerteventura

The subtropical climate is warm and dry, aided by the winds of the north and the east, which avoid the heat and humidity typical of the marine areas.

For this reason the temperatures generally remain below 30 degrees and do not go down more than 16 during the colder months.

For a perfect holiday we recommend coming from September to November, months when the wind is not too strong (as from May to August) and the heat is not high.

Generally it is enough to have a shirt and shorts, with the help of a sweatshirt in the evening hours, especially if you decide to opt for a holiday in winter time.

As mentioned, Fuerteventura is also called “the Island of Eternal Spring”, so you will never get too hot or too cold.

Bathing in Fuerteventura

The ocean is certainly practicable especially on the east coast, from the Grandes Playas of Corralejo to Costa Calma: the beach gradually plunges into the water, so bathing becomes a pleasant experience.

If you are playful, sometimes the small waves can help you, so that you can gently ride them with a Chinese polystyrene board.

In contrast, from El Cotillo to Cofete and Jandía to the far south, the waves are a bit more massive and push surfers to cross the waters to have fun with extraordinary evolutions.

In Jandia every year one of the most appreciated international sports competitions for surfers takes place.
